What Is a Pipe Weight Calculator?
Estimate pipe weight for round, square, and rectangular hollow sections.
A pipe weight calculator determines the weight of hollow pipes and tubes based on their cross-section dimensions and material density. It is essential for structural engineering, plumbing projects, material procurement, shipping logistics, and cost estimation across construction and manufacturing.

Round, Square, Rectangular
This calculator supports round, square, and rectangular pipe shapes with material presets including mild steel (MS), stainless steel (SS 304/316), aluminum 6061/6063, copper, brass, cast iron, galvanized iron (GI), titanium, PVC, CPVC, and HDPE. For round pipes, select from standard NPS sizes and pipe schedules (Sch 5 through Sch 160 and XXS) to auto-fill outer diameter and wall thickness per ASME B36.10.
Pipe Weight Calculation Formulas
The exact formulas for each pipe shape, plus a steel shortcut.
Step 1.Round pipe weight
where ID = OD − 2t
Step 2.Square pipe weight
where S = outer side
Step 3.Rectangular pipe weight
where W = width, H = height, t = thickness
Step 4.Steel shortcut (imperial)
assumes steel density 0.2836 lb/in³; OD & t in inches

Tips & Common Mistakes
Practical guidance for accurate pipe weight estimation.
Use NPS + Schedule
Select standard sizes instead of entering dimensions manually for exact ASME/ANSI values.
NPS ≠ Actual OD
NPS 2" has an OD of 2.375" (60.3 mm). The nominal size is not the outer diameter.
Sch 40 is standard
Schedule 40 for general use. Sch 80 for high pressure. Sch 160 and XXS for extreme conditions.
Wrong density
SS is ~2% heavier than MS. Aluminum is ~65% lighter. PVC is ~82% lighter than steel.
±10% tolerance
ASTM A530 allows ±12.5% wall thickness tolerance. Real weight may differ from calculated.
Don't forget fittings
Elbows, tees, flanges, and valves add 20–40% weight over straight pipe alone.
