How Is the PSAT Score Calculated?

Understanding the raw-to-scaled score conversion process

The PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) consists of two sections: Reading & Writing (54 questions) and Math (44 questions), for a total of 98 questions. Each correct answer earns one raw score point with no penalty for wrong answers.

Raw Score (correct answers) → Estimated Scaled Score (160–760 per section) → Total (320–1520)

The College Board uses equating and Item Response Theory (IRT) to convert raw scores to scaled scores. Because the Digital PSAT is adaptive — Module 2 difficulty adjusts based on Module 1 performance — two students with the same number of correct answers can receive different scaled scores depending on item difficulty. The estimates in this calculator are averaged from published practice tests and may vary by ±20–40 points from actual scores.

How to Calculate PSAT Index Score for National Merit

Understanding the Selection Index and qualification thresholds

The PSAT Selection Index is used by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) to identify Commended Students and Semifinalists. It is calculated from your EBRW and Math section scores on a 48–228 scale.

Digital PSAT Selection Index:

Selection Index = (2 × Reading & Writing + Math) ÷ 10   (range 48–228)
Semifinalists (~210–225)

Top ~1% in each state. Cutoffs vary by state from ~210 (NM, ND, WV, WY) to ~225 (DC, MA, NJ). About 16,000 students qualify nationally.

Commended Students (210+ for 2026)

Top ~3% nationally. Recognized with a letter of commendation. About 34,000 students qualify.

Tips for Improving Your PSAT Score

Evidence-based strategies for better performance

Answer every question

There's no penalty for guessing on the Digital PSAT. Never leave a question blank — a random guess gives you a 25% chance of gaining a point.

Focus on Module 1

Module 1 determines Module 2 difficulty. Strong Module 1 performance unlocks the harder Module 2, which gives access to higher scaled scores.

Use official practice materials

The College Board's Bluebook app has official Digital PSAT practice tests. These mirror the real test format and difficulty level.

Learn the Desmos calculator

The Digital PSAT includes a built-in Desmos graphing calculator for all Math questions. Practice with it before test day to save time.

Treat it as SAT prep

The PSAT closely mirrors the SAT format. Strong PSAT preparation translates directly to better SAT performance. Use your PSAT results to identify weak areas for SAT study.
