What Is a Topsoil Calculator?
Overview of the tool and what it helps you estimate.
A Topsoil Calculator helps you estimate the volume and weight of topsoil needed for lawns, gardens, raised beds, landscaping, and grading projects. Enter your area dimensions, select a topsoil type, and get results in cubic yards, tons, and bags.
Topsoil is the uppermost layer of soil (typically 2–8 inches deep) that contains the highest concentration of organic matter and nutrients. It's essential for healthy plant growth, lawn establishment, and garden productivity.

How to Calculate How Much Topsoil You Need
Three simple steps to estimate your topsoil needs.
Measure Your Area
Measure the length, width, and desired depth of your project area. Use the project preset selector for recommended depths, or enter your own.
Calculate Volume
The calculator multiplies your dimensions to get volume in cubic feet, then converts to cubic yards (ft³ ÷ 27). A 10% waste factor is added by default for settling and uneven ground.
Get Weight & Bags
Volume is multiplied by topsoil density to get weight in tons. Bag counts are derived from volume: 40-lb bags hold ≈0.75 ft³, 1 ft³ bags hold 1.0 ft³.
Core Formulas
Volume = Length × Width × Depth
Cubic Yards = Volume (ft³) ÷ 27
Weight (tons) = Volume (ft³) × Density (lb/ft³) ÷ 2,000
Bags (40 lb) = Volume (ft³) ÷ 0.75
New Lawn
20 ft × 10 ft × 4 in · Screened (75 lb/ft³)
Volume: 66.7 ft³ (2.47 yd³)
Weight: 2.5 tons (2,500 lb)
Bags: 89 bags (40 lb)
+10% waste: 2.72 yd³ / 98 bags
Garden Bed
12 ft × 4 ft × 6 in · Organic (65 lb/ft³)
Volume: 24 ft³ (0.89 yd³)
Weight: 0.78 tons (1,560 lb)
Bags: 32 bags (40 lb)
+10% waste: 0.98 yd³ / 36 bags
Topsoil Types & Densities
Density values and best uses for each topsoil type.
Screened Topsoil
Filtered, rock-free. Best for lawns & general landscaping.
Premium Topsoil
High-quality blend with organic matter. Ideal for gardens.
Organic Topsoil
Rich in organic content. Great for flower beds & vegetables.
Blended Topsoil
Mixed with compost or sand. Versatile for most projects.
Sandy Loam Topsoil
Well-draining, light texture. Good for lawns in wet areas.
Clay Loam Topsoil
Retains moisture well. Suited for shrubs & trees.
Garden Mix
Topsoil blended with compost & peat. Raised beds & gardens.
Lawn Topsoil
Fine-screened for smooth, even lawns. Turf establishment.
Fill / Unscreened Topsoil
Unprocessed. For grading, filling low spots, and leveling.
Compost-Enriched Topsoil
50/50 topsoil-compost mix. Nutrient-rich for planting.
Density is auto-set when you select a topsoil type. Override if your supplier provides a specific value. Moisture content can increase weight by 20–30%.

Tips for Ordering Topsoil
Practical advice to save money and get the right amount.
Always order 10% extra
Topsoil settles 10–15% after spreading and watering. Uneven ground also requires more material than calculated.
Buy in bulk for large areas
Bagged topsoil costs $5–$8 per bag. Bulk costs $15–$50 per yard— 3–5× cheaper for anything over 2 yd³.
Check quality before buying
Good topsoil should be dark, crumbly, and smell earthy. Avoid topsoil with visible clay clumps, rocks, or weed seeds.
Know your delivery options
Most suppliers deliver in 10–15 yd³ dump trucks. For smaller amounts, a pickup truck holds about 1–2 yd³.
Prep the area first
Remove old grass, rocks, and debris. Till the existing soil so the new topsoil bonds with the subsoil below.
Get multiple quotes
Prices vary dramatically by supplier, location, and season. Get 2–3 quotes before ordering to find the best deal.
Common Mistakes When Calculating Topsoil
Quick checklist to prevent ordering errors.
Mixing up inches and feet
4 inches is 0.33 feet, not 4 feet. This is the most common error and inflates your order by 12×.
Ignoring settling
Topsoil compresses 10–15% after watering and compaction. A 4-inch layer may settle to 3.5 inches.
Confusing topsoil with fill dirt
Fill dirt is denser (100 lb/ft³) and has no organic content. It’s for structural fill, not planting.
Mixing up tons and cubic yards
1 yd³ of topsoil weighs about 1–1.2 tons depending on type. Suppliers may price by either unit.
Skipping the waste factor
Always add 10% extra for uneven ground, spillage, and settling. Sloped areas may need 15%.
Ordering exact amounts
Always round up to avoid a second delivery charge. Delivery fees can exceed material cost on small reorders.
